Special train for Ernakulam

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway will run a special from Hyderabad to Ernakulam on January 17. It will have 17 coaches, including ten of sleeper class. The train (No.766 A) will leave Hyderabad at 9 p.m. and arrive at Ernakulam at 11.55 p.m. the next day, according to a press release issued by the SCR.

En route, the train will arrive/depart Secunderabad at 9.20/9.30 p.m., Kazipet, 11.30/11.35 p.m., Warangal, 11.55/11.57 p.m., Kurnool Town, 2.30/2.32 a.m., Vijayawada, 4.30/4.40 a.m., Tenali, 5.10/5.12 a.m., Bapatla, 5.47/5.49 a.m., Chirala, 6.01/6.03 a.m., Ongole 6.48/6.50 a.m., Nellore, 8.20/8.22 a.m., Gudur, 9.25/9.30 a.m., Renigunta, 11/11.10 a.m., Katpadi, 1.50/1.55 p.m., Jolarpetai, 2.55/3 p.m., Salem, 4.50/4.55 p.m., Erode 5.50/5.55 p.m., Palghat Junction, 8.35/8.40 p.m.

It will leave Shoranur at 9.25 p.m. and arrive/depart Tiruchannur at 10.30/10.35 p.m. and Alwaye at 11.25/11.30 p.m.

Mahila samakya seeks probe

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Chaitanya Mahila Samakya, whose activist Lakshmi was killed in an alleged encounter with the police in Prakasam district, on Sunday demanded a judicial inquiry into what it described as a murder.

Jyoti, president, and Devendra, executive committee member, in a statement here said Lakshmi was not a Maoist dalam member, as claimed by the police, but a member of the committee. They alleged that she was "caught and shot dead by the police".

The samakya leaders wanted intellectuals to condemn the killing. They said the organisation would hold a meeting to condole the death of Lakshmi on January 18 at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, here.

23 juvenile home inmates escape

NIZAMABAD: Twenty-three of the 29 inmates of the Government Juvenile Observation Home located on the outskirts of the town on the Armoor road escaped on Sunday night.

The Superintendent of Police, N. Madhusudhan Reddy, told The Hindu that the inmates escaped by overpowering an aged supervisor and a watchman at dinner time. There was no guard or police security at the home. The SP said that they had alerted the neighbouring districts' police and intensified checking at bus and railway stations.

Plea for hike in hamali rates

HYDERABAD: The AITUC-affiliated Andhra Pradesh Ration Dealers and Workers' Welfare Association and Andhra Pradesh State Civil Supplies Hamalis' Union on Sunday demanded an increase in the hamali rates by Rs.5 a bag and withdrawal of the PF case in the High Court.

S. Balraj, who is general secretary of the association and convener of the union, in a statement wanted the Government to offer dealership to a family member after the dealer's death, provide insurance policy to dealers and shop workers, distribute janata cloth through FP shops to save weavers and sanction credit cards for dealers.

Plaque damaged

NALGONDA: A plaque, with the names of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy being inscribed on it, has been damaged by a group of unidentified persons at the mandal headquarters of Damaracharla.

According to reports, a group of youths reached the spot in the night by an autorickshaw and damaged the plaque with boulders. Police sources, however, have said that it is not the handiwork of Maoists.

The sarpanch, Veerababu, unveiled the plaque marking the inauguration of the `Damaracharla Rural Water Supply scheme' announced by the Chief Minister during his visit to Peddavura on Thursday.

Cotton destroyed in fire

KARIMNAGAR: A huge pile of cotton kept in a private mill by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) for processing purpose caught fire on the outskirts of Vemulawada town on Sunday.

According to reports, sparks from blower machines were the cause of the mishap. Cotton, which was kept in the open, caught fire. Three fire tenders were pressed into service to put off the fire.

It is estimated that about 1,000 quintals of cotton was destroyed in the fire.

BCs for rise in budget allocation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes Welfare Association on Sunday demanded 54 per cent of the one lakh acres proposed to be distributed by the Government for BCs in tune with their population.

The executive committee meeting of the association also urged the Government to increase the budget allocation for BC Welfare to Rs. 800 crores. It adopted resolutions on several other demands. R. Krishnaiah, president, chaired the meeting.

The association called upon both the Government and extremists to observe restraint for ensuring peace in the State and to extend the ceasefire by six months.

The demands include allocating of Rs.100 crores to the BC Corporation and releasing loans with 50 per cent margin money.

Panther scare in village

NELLORE: A panther strayed into Yeni village of Rapur road scaring people of the area.

According to information, the panther was sighted on Saturday night and passers-by took to heels on the double road.

BJP State secretary removed

HYDERABAD: G.R. Karunakar has been relieved of the post of secretary of the BJP State unit. This was announced here on Sunday by the party president, N. Indrasena Reddy, according to a press release issued by K. Lakshman, general secretary.

Rail line survey

KHAMMAM: Survey for the new broad gauge line from Bhadrachalam to Kovvur will be updated and a proposal to this effect be made in the budget 2004-2005, according to the Union Minister for Railways, Lalu Prasad.

He wrote to the Minister of State for Rural Development, A. Narendra, in response to representation forwarded by the latter on this issue stating that the Ministry could consider the construction of the new railway line after updating the survey.

Storm weakens

VISAKHAPATNAM: Saturday's cyclonic storm over the south east Bay of Bengal has moved slightly westwards and lay centred at about 900 km southeast of Nagapattinam and showed signs of weakening, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here on Sunday late in the evening. However, under its influence, strong winds from north easterly direction, occasionally with speeds reaching 45 kmph were likely along and off south coastal Andhra Pradesh, the bulletin added.

Meanwhile, dry weather prevailed in the State with the minimum temperature changing a little in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. It went up at one or two places in Telangana. The lowest night temperature of the State for Sunday was recorded by Arogyavaram at 13 degree Celsius. Weather will continue to be dry tomorrow.

Workshop postponed

ADILABAD: The workshop on the national Food-for-Work programme to be held at Nirmal on January 17 was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. According to an official press release on Sunday, the workshop would now be held on January 20 at 12 noon at the Nirmal MPDO's office.

CPI meet today

KARIMNAGAR: The 17th convention of the Communist Party of India (CPI) Karimnagar district unit, would be organised in Husnabad town from January 17 to 19 on a massive scale.

The CPI state secretary, Suravaram Sudhakhar Reddy, the national council executive member, Puvvada Nageshwara Rao, the assistant secretary, K Narayana, the State executive committee member, Y. Gattaiah, the member and music director, Vandemantaram Srinivas and others would participate.

Last date extended

WARANGAL: The last date for payment of admission fee for BA/BCom and PG and PG diploma courses of School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE) has been extended till February 9, 2005.

According to SDLCE Director, N. Lingamurthy, candidates can join the BA and B.Com first year without paying any late fee and those seeking admission into PG previous and PG diploma courses should have to pay a fine of Rs. 100. Limited seats are available in BCJ/BLISc/MBA/MSc (Psychology) and MSc (Environmental Sciences).
