Honorary doctorates for seven persons

By Our Special Correspondent

DHARWAD, JAN. 16. The Academic Senate of Karnatak University on Saturday endorsed a proposal by the Syndicate to confer honorary doctorates on three more persons. With this, the number of persons recommended to the Chancellor for the conferring of honorary doctorate has reached seven.

The proposal, if cleared by the Chancellor, will make the university the first in the State to confer the highest number of doctorates at one convocation. A list comprising the names recommended by the Syndicate at its meeting on January 10 was returned by the Chancellor to enable the university to seek the opinion of the Senate. The Senate, which met on January 8, recommended that honorary doctorates can be conferred on Nissar Ahmed, poet; S.K. Ramachandra Rao; S.C. Sharma; and Annadaneshwar Swamiji of Mundargi. Following some objections that the university had preferred persons outside its jurisdiction for doctorates, the Vice-Chancellor, Khaja Peer, consulted some eminent persons in the region, including Patil Puttappa, veteran journalist, and decided to add the names of N.K. Kulkarni, writer; Chennavira Kanavi, poet; and B.A. Sanadi, poet; to the list. The Syndicate approved the new proposal and sent it to the Chancellor who returned it on the grounds of procedural flaw that the Senate has not approved it. It was to rectify the flaw a meeting was held on Saturday.
