White paper on wakf lands sought

By Our Staff Reporter

Members of the Krishna district committee of Awaaz at a roundtable conference in Vijayawada on Sunday.

VIJAYAWADA, JAN.16. Speakers at a round table conference here on Sunday asked the Government to release a white paper on the status of wakf lands in the State.

The meeting organised by Awaz, a voluntary organisation, at the Press Club also decided to constitute a wakf land protection forum to take up the wakf lands issue. The organisation's president, Muzzafar Ahmed, presided over the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, the local Muslim leader, Mohd. Azeem, said that in Krishna district alone 3,400 acres of wakf land was under illegal occupation. Mr. Azeem alleged that the Congress Government failed to protect the lands from encroachment. He said the wakf lands had fallen into the hands of land grabbers and vested interests, as most of the community members were illiterate.

Action demanded

The Sanathnagar Welfare Association leader, Mateen, alleged that wakf lands were being sold away by vested interests. He demanded criminal action against officials and buyers responsible for such activities.

The CPI(M) city secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, wanted the community members to come forward and exert pressure on the Government to ensure protection of wakf lands. Another speaker, Khaja Moinuddin, called upon the community members to launch an agitation to free wakf lands from encroachment.
