Narikuravas trained to make quality bead articles

TIRUCHI, JAN.16. A three-week-long workshop to impart training to Narikuravas who were members of self-help groups, making export-quality bead articles and value-added handicrafts, concluded yesterday.

Ten Narikuravas, belonging to various SHGs, who successfully completed the training programme, were provided with `artisan credit cards' of the Indian Bank, Tiruverambur branch, at a function organised here.

The Bead Products Design Development Workshop was got up under the auspices of Narikurava Education and Welfare Society, sponsored by Skillshare International, a voluntary agency, at the Narikurava Colony at Devarayaneri near here.

The workshop aimed at improving the quality of traditional handicrafts of women, besides making them economical to produce, conforming to export quality.

The artisans learnt skills to make over 70 brand-new export quality bead products at the workshop under the guidance of two design trainers, Aachal Sodhani and Nethra Patadia from the India Craft Foundation, Bangalore.

In his valedictory address, the Manager of the Tiruverambur Branch of Indian Bank, Kaliaperumal, stressed on the need for uplifting the narikurava community and said the bank was committed to the cause. He said the bank would continue to extend various credit facilities for those engaged in the business of bead handicrafts.

The Head of the Nomads Academy, Tiruchi, Bosco Rayan, said the living conditions of this community had been rising socially and economically in the past decade due to help from various agencies.

The Tiruverambur Block Development Officer, Thirunavukkarasu and Executive Officer of the Tiruverumbur panchayat union, Ali, extended their support to construction of flush-out latrines in all households in the Devarayaneri Narikurava Colony with government subsidies.

S. Mahendran, secretary, NEWS, women group organiser, M. Seetha, and I. Samuel Christudoss, advisor, Rotaract Club of BHEL City, spoke.
