MADURAI, JAN. 16. The State Archaeological Department officials have deciphered 1,400 inscriptions found in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts. This is part of the exercise involving the deciphering of over 3,000 stone inscriptions found in six southern districts. Official sources said the first phase of the work had been completed 15 days ahead of schedule. The department was planning to bring out the text deciphered from the 1,400 inscriptions in the form of a four-volume book. These inscriptions provide an insight into the social life of the people of those times. It provides details of trade with foreign countries, visits of foreign traders, the construction of a Buddhist temple by people from Kadaram (Malaysia) in Nagapattinam, flood and famine, educational system, judiciary, caste system among many other things. However, a majority of them spoke about kings of various regions making munificent donations to temples in the form of lands.Four teams, three from Madurai and one from Ramanathapuram, were carrying out the second phase of the exercise involving over 2,000 stone inscriptions in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar districts. Since the inscriptions were located in different places, it would at least nine months to execute the task, the sources said. The team members have planned to complete nearly 400 inscriptions every month. Teams from the Archaeological Department in Tirunelveli were also carrying out a similar task. Of the approximate 30,000 inscriptions in Tamil Nadu, the Archaeological departments of State and Central Governments have deciphered 10,000 of them, sources said.
