VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 17. The All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, Digvijay Singh, said here today that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, should order a probe by senior officials into allegations of fake encounters. During a brief chat with reporters, Mr. Digvijay Singh said despite escalation in tension, he was confident that the next round of talks with the Maoists would be successful. When his attention was drawn to claims by CPI (Maoist) and Janashakti leaders of killing of naxalites and sympathisers in `fake' encounters, he said: "The encounters should not have happened. The Chief Minister should ensure that fake encounters do not take place. Senior officials should also probe the allegations.'' Mr. Singh, who is the party in charge for the State, said during the Telugu Desam Party regime a lot of fake encounters had taken place and that the Congress Government was committed to continuing talks with the naxalites. The AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, had set up a task force under the chairmanship of the Sanatnagar MLA, Marri Sashidhar Reddy, to make suggestions on how to solve problems in States, where naxalites wielded a lot of influence. Replying to questions, he said the organisational polls would be completed by May. The Pradesh Returning Officer would appoint district returning officers soon. He said the list of members had already been published.
CPI joins chorus
Our Karimnagar Staff Reporter adds: The CPI State secretary, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, demanded that the Government order a judicial enquiry into the recent encounters. Mr. Reddy was in Husnabad town to participate in the district CPI convention today.
