A group of cadres offered noon meal to mentally retarded children of the Bishop Sergeant School, Palayamkottai, while some others gave `annadhaanam' at the Sri Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal Temple.
`No plastic campaign'
Members of the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment and forest personnel jointly organised a `no plastic campaign' at Manimuthar on January 15 in view of `Maattu Pongal', the day on which thousands of tourists gathered at the Manimuthar Falls and its surroundings. Since wild animals face serious threat from plastic bags left behind by tourists, the volunteers and the forest personnel met the tourists and explained the adverse impacts of the plastic bags, which is also detrimental to percolation of water into the soil. They collected polythene bags and put them in dustbins. They also collected polythene bags from the tourists, when they crossed the check-post near the dam.
