NEW DELHI, JAN. 17. An MLA from Uttar Pradesh, Lalji Varma, was caught at Indira Gandhi International Airport here yesterday when he was allegedly carrying 22 live rounds of .32 bore in his hand baggage and was about to board an Air Sahara flight for Lucknow. It was at around 6-45 a.m. that Mr. Varma reported for the pre-embarkation security check of the Air Sahara flight S2 6137 bound for Lucknow. However, a sub-inspector of the Central Industrial Security Force, P.K. Singh, observed some ammunition-like objects in his hand baggage and subjected the baggage to a physical check which led to the alleged recovery of 22 live rounds of .32 bore from the hand bag. On being questioned, Mr. Varma, a resident of Muhiddinpur in Ibrahimpur area of Ambedkar Nagar district in U.P., disclosed that he had a valid arms licence at his residence and had inadvertently carried the ammunition in his bag. Subsequently, the MLA was allowed to board his flight as he produced his Assembly identity card and LIC premium receipt and assured that he would send a copy of the arms licences immediately upon reaching his home. The CISF personnel also recorded his statement and handed over the same to Palam police station along with the recovered rounds, MLA's identity card and premium receipt.
