MOSCOW, JAN. 18. Russia has added Denmark to the list of European countries that are banned from importing plants onto its territory after destructive insects called California thrips were found in Danish flower shipments. The official noted that Danish exporters had made numerous breaches of Russian plant import requirements and questioned the veracity of documentation accompanying the plants. Denmark is the third country to face a plant ban from Russia. Russia banned the import of Dutch flowers and potted plants on June 28 after California thrips were found in some samples. That ban, which was widened in December to include all plants, was estimated to cost Dutch exporters about euro 500 million annually. Russia closed its borders to plant products from Germany for the same reason in November. AP
