U.S. denies Iran mission

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, JAN. 18. The Pentagon has criticised a report that it has conducted reconnaissance missions in Iran but would not deny the assertion that the President, George W Bush, has signed off on an executive order — or a series of them — authorising secret missions by special forces on suspected terror targets in 10 countries in West Asia and South Asia.

The author Seymour Hersh in a New Yorker article "The Coming Wars" said Mr. Bush had signed a series of secret findings and authorised the operations. In Iran, the mission was to identify potential nuclear and other targets.

"The Iranian regime's apparent nuclear ambitions and its demonstrated support for terrorist organisations is a global challenge that deserves much more serious treatment than Seymour Hersh provides in the New Yorker article," said the Pentagon's chief spokesman, Lawrence DiRita.
