K.Sampath, heading the commission to probe the condition of educational institutions in the State, constituted in the wake of the Kumbakonam fire accident last year, inspecting a school in Pudukottai district on Monday.
PUDUKOTTAI, JAN.18 . K. Sampath, retired judge of the Madras High Court and heading the Commission to probe the `condition' of educational institutions all over the State, constituted in the wake of the Kumbakonam fire accident last year, inspected government and private schools in the district on Monday and Tuesday. Mr. Sampath inspected the schools in Mathur, Nallur, Keeranur, Kulathur, Ammachathiram, Aranthangi, Vigneswaram, Avudaiyarkoil, Mimisal, Kaikurichi and Pudukottai on Monday. He stressed the importance of having fire control equipment in schools as part of safety measure. He advised the authorities to construct adequate number of toilets for boys and girls separately within the school premises. The Commission members inspected the electrical system in schools and asked the authorities to cover the motor with proper lid. Stressing the need to establish compound walls and renovate old buildings, they asked the authorities not to keep spade, crowbars etc. in classrooms. They wanted construction of noon meal centres wherever such facility was not available. The Commission members Rani Kandasamy, Saksena, Vijayan, Annamalai, the Chief Educational Officer, Pudukottai, Rajarajeswari, accompanied the panel. On Tuesday, the Commission inspected government and private schools at Marthandapuram, Chinnappa Nagar, Machuvadi, Perungalur, Adhanakottai, Gadharvakottai, Karambakudi, Arimalam, Thirumayam and Ponnamaravathy. Its members directed the Education Department officials to order closure of some unapproved nursery and primary schools and admit the students in nearby approved schools. They ordered issue of notices to schools, which were running LKG and UKG classes without approval.
