BSNL to provide more cell phone connections

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 18. In an effort to meet customer demand for prepaid cards, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Pondicherry, plans to provide 5,000 prepaid cell phone connections in the next 30 days, said its general manager, S. M. Kalavathy.

Speaking to The Hindu , Ms. Kalavathy said Pondicherry already had around 51,000 cell phone connections, of which 44,000 were prepaid and 7,000 postpaid. "We are now expanding exchange capacity wherever the traffic is high. We are doubling capacity.''.

On the issue of those who had lost basic telephone or cell phone connections in the tsunami, Ms. Kalavathy said that for landlines , rental for the period was being waived and new instruments were being provided.
