NEW DELHI, JAN. 18. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry today announced fee waivers and rescheduled board and university examinations for the convenience of tsunami-affected students. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the HRD Minister, Arjun Singh. As per the decision, semester fees, examination fees and entrance examination fees will be waived for students living in the tsunami-hit areas. The fees will be borne by the Central Board of Secondary Education or the University Grants Commission as the case may be. Further, it was decided that the Class X and XII examination conducted by the CBSE would be rescheduled for those students who wished to avail of the revised schedule. While the CBSE examinations are to be conducted between March 1 and April 1, the revised schedule will stretch from May 19 to 31. Practical examinations will be held after the theory papers wherever necessary. The Minister has also requested State Boards to make similar concessions for the tsunami-affected students to minimise their troubles in their hour of trial. Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas will conduct special coaching classes for Board and entrance examinations. Besides, students will be permitted to take their examinations at centres of their choice. The Government has also simplified the procedure for obtaining duplicate certificates, and instructions have been issued that these documents should be honoured.
