Pondicherry
By Rajesh B. Nair
PONDICHERRY, JAN .18. The India Reserve Battalion (IRB), a para-military force on the lines of the Central Reserve Police Force, based in Pondicherry will be operational by 2006. The Revenue Department is acquiring 102 acres of land at Pannithitu and Narambai here and the recruitment process is half way through, the Inspector-General of Police, P.R. Meena, told The Hindu here today. The battalion would have 1,007 personnel. Though it would be at the disposal of the Union Home Ministry, the force would be under the control of the Inspector-General of Police, Union Territory. The territorial administration sought the Centre's permission to raise one more battalion of the IRB.
Two-fold benefit
For the Union Territory the benefit of having an IRB in its territory is two-fold. First, a big-armed force is at its control. Second it will give employment to the locals, as the entire force has to be generated from within. The recruitment process, which started two months ago, will end by March. The full battalion will be sent to CRPF and BSF camps for a 10-month training. Some 675 constables will have to be recruited. The process will be almost through on January 23. That day 1,408 candidates, who cleared the physical tests, will appear for written tests. The final written tests for wireless operators and sub-inspectors will be held on January 20 and 22. The Pondicherry Government has sought Centre's sanction to raise one more company of the Pondicherry Armed Police. At present, it has five companies.
