TD retains ZPTC

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, JAN. 18. The TDP has retained Somandepalli Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) winning the by-election held for the seat. Counting of votes for the by-election, which was taken as a prestigious issue by the TDP and Congress, was taken up on Tuesday at Somandepalli.

E. Venkatesulu of the Telugu Desam defeated his nearest rival V. Kambalappa of Congress by a margin of 2,273 votes. The by-election was necessitated after the murder of the sitting TDP member, M. Aswartha Narayana, last September.

Of the 17,984 votes polled, 17,451 were valid. The TDP candidate polled 9,762 votes against 7,489 secured by his Congress rival. The remaining two independents in the fray polled 200 votes together. Polling for the by-elections was held on January 16.

Congress plans held up

The by-election result will put brakes on the Congress plans to wrest the ZP Chairperson post for the time being. A stalemate has continued over the Chairpersonship since last July when the TDP suspended the incumbent, Jonna Suryanarayana, from the party.
