Maoists `impose' ban on RTC

By S. Ramu

NALGONDA, JAN. 18. Maoists have taken a serious note of the reported movement of police parties in the guise of commuters in Road Transport Corporation (RTC) buses in Devarakonda division.

In a bid to prevent movement of police personnel, naxals have, for the first time, asked RTC not to ply services to certain interior hamlets till further orders.

"The police, in the guise of commuters, are coming to thandas by RTC buses as part of search operations. We are not responsible if we blow up your buses that carry police parties,'' is the warning of a naxal leader to the crew of a night-halt bus. Naxalites also reportedly asked tribals not to travel by RTC buses.

The Police Department is using two red coloured buses to transport its personnel from district headquarters to naxal-affected areas.

Apart from warning the crew against plying buses to Kambalapally, Pogilla and Teldevarapally, the Krishna Patti Dalam has also sent a letter to RTC higher-ups, demanding cancellation of services.

Services cancelled

When contacted, the depot Manager of Devarakonda, M.V. Krishna Rao, confirmed that naxals had issued a stern warning to his crew against running services for Kambalapally and other areas. "After due consultation with police officers, we have cancelled services to certain interior villages from Tuesday,'' he said. "Buses are returning to the depot from Murupunootala in Chandampet mandal," he said.

Maoists also pasted a couple of posters on the Kambalapally bus appealing to the people to make the State bandh on January 20 a success. In another poster, they denounced the "fake encounters.'' Meanwhile, the RTC Regional Manager, Sadasiva Rao, instructed depot managers to take decisions on the feasibility of plying buses after consulting local DSPs.
