ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 18. The Minister for Electricity, Aryadan Mohammed, has said that the State Government is formulating a comprehensive project to improve the voltage of power supplied in some rural areas in the State. Inaugurating an intensive power development project of the Kerala State Electricity Board for Mavelikkara municipality at a function there on Tuesday evening, Mr. Mohammed said the Government was planning to extend the project to rural areas to solve the problem of low voltage. At present, the project was being implemented only in municipal areas. Help from the Union Government was expected for the extension. The Minister said the project would minimise transmission and distribution losses and improve the quality of power. The project was expected to cover all villages in the State in five years. He said the KSEB would provide five lakh new connections this year. He observed that the power production in the State had not shown a significant rise in recent years because of the overdependence on hydel power. A number of hydel projects which had got the clearance of the authorities concerned could not be implemented because of opposition from environmental groups, he added. The Minister said the Government would take steps to clear the doubts raised by these groups and implement the projects. M. Murali, MLA, presided over the function. C.S. Sujata, MP, delivered the keynote address.
