Centre to upgrade hospitals on coast

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, JAN. 18. In the wake of the tsunami havoc, the Centre plans to upgrade hospitals in the coastal belt. The National Rural Health Mission, to be launched in a few days, will provide for the scheme, Panabaka Lakshmi, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, said today.

To begin with, hospitals in the coastal areas would be provided with ambulances, said Ms. Lakshmi, who came to Cuddalore to visit the affected areas. As health was a State subject she would not make any commitment whether the Centre would equip the hospitals with modern facilities.

The Rs. 3,600-crore rural health mission would rope in locals to create health awareness. Under the concept of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Associate), villagers would choose one woman from among them to act as a sort of "midwife."

The women representatives would be trained in health aspects, and they in turn would create awareness among the people of institutionalised child delivery, nutritional supplement and better sanitation. The Centre would give the ASHAs a monthly honorarium.
