Jayalalithaa asks World Bank to clear pending projects

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN.18 . The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today appealed to the World Bank to clear several pending projects and urged the Asian Development Bank to take up a new project for road development.

Using her meeting with the visiting WB and ADB teams, who are studying the needs of the tsunami-hit areas in the State, as an opportunity to reiterate the State's demand on the pending projects, Ms. Jayalalithaa asked the Country Director, India, WB, Michael F. Carter, to give urgent clearance for projects such as the Tamil Nadu Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Tamil Nadu Poverty Reduction Project, Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project-III, Tamil Nadu Water Resources Consolidation Project and the Third Chennai Water Supply Project.

An official release here said Mr. Carter indicated that these projects would be processed expeditiously.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also invited the Country Director of the Asian Development Bank, Louis de Jonghe, to take up a new project to upgrade the State Highways and major district roads, as the ADB had not undertaken any project in the State recently. Mr. Jonghe promised to examine the request at the earliest, the release said.
