NEW DELHI, JAN. 18. The Government has decided to shorten this year's Republic Day Parade by 45 minutes to sustain public interest and participation, said the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee. Denying that the reduction was linked to cutting down on ceremonials in view of the tsunami disaster, he said the "duration is just too long''. Immediately after the disaster, there was talk in the Defence Ministry about cutting down on marchpasts and displays in memory of the tsunami victims and the services got down to discussing the events that could be spared. But the Government later decided to allow the services to display their full military might. With the duration of the parade being considered long, slight cuts have been made in the number of tableaux and marching contingents by both school children and the security forces. The parade will now last one hour and 45 minutes instead of the traditional two and half hours.
