`Newspapers must play constructive role'

GADAG, JAN. 19. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has called upon newspapers to become the harbinger of change in society by playing a constructive role.

Participating in the golden jubilee celebration of Nagarika, a local Kannada daily here on Tuesday, Mr. Chaturvedi said that journalism is both a weapon and guide for brining about socio-economic changes. He commended the role of Nagarika in meeting the regional aspirations of the people and said that newspapers as a whole had a done a yeomen job in the political, economic and social history of the country.

H.K. Patil, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, described Nagarika as a paper which provided inspiration for undertaking public service and for launching the pro-people movements. Pralhad Joshi, MP, the seer of Tontadarya Mutt, Swami Nirbhayayand of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashrama spoke on the occasion.

Veerappa Kowtal, journalist, R.K. Jamadar, J.K. Jamadar, Shashikumar Kerur and Shedusing Jamadar were felicitated on the occasion. Ajit Hombali welcomed the gathering.
