The MLA, M.A. Gafoor, addressing motor workers in Kurnool on Wednesday.
KURNOOL, JAN. 19. Activists of the motor workers union, led by the Kurnool MLA, M.A. Gafoor, staged dharna at the Collectorate urging the Government to take steps to protect lorry workers from highway robbers. In the latest incident a lorry driver, Karrenna, and clearner, Mahesh, were robbed of Rs. 38,000 and injured near Dhone on January 15. Two years ago, highway robbers waylaid a lorry between Kodumur and Devanakonda and injured the crew. In Madhya Pradesh, a driver and cleaner from Kurnool were done to death. Recently, an APSRTC bus was waylaid near Jedcharla and the driver attacked. A delegation, led by the MLA, met the Joint Collector, Ramsankar Naik, and sought steps to check highway robbery and arrest of those responsible for the Dhone incident. The delegation urged the Government to introduce patrol every 50 km on the national highways. It also wanted the Government to construct rest rooms along the highway and provide medical facilities. The union urged the Government to introduce eight-hour work schedule for drivers to avoid fatigue among drivers. The CITU leaders, Prabhakar Reddy, Pulla Reddy, and others were present.
