KOTTAYAM, JAN. 19. Railways today successfully completed the trial run over the newly electrified Ernakulam-Kottayam line. Expressing satisfaction over the preliminary run, railway authorities said the new line would become operational on the basis of the report of the Chief Safety Commissioner, Bangalore, who is scheduled to inspect the line in February. The electric engine that commenced its run from Ernakulam South station at 10-36 a.m. reached Kottayam, a distance of 64 k.m., at 12-35 p.m. The engine had to halt at Thripunithura, Kuppanthara and Ettumanur stations for crossings. According to officials, the line is being readied for a speed of 160 kmph. However, given the single line status, the effective speed may not exceed 100 kmph, they said. The 12-member technical team was led by divisional electrical engineer Surendra Yadav, divisional electrical engineer Unnikrishnan, deputy chief engineer Joseph and loco inspector K.V. Mathew.
