NEW DELHI, JAN. 19. After an initial denial of information, Pakistan today promised to investigate and keep India posted of the firing of mortar shells by its troops on Indian Army posts in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday night. "The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) spoke to his Pakistani counterpart this morning and informed him about our concerns on the issue. We told him that [it] is a violation of the ceasefire. Weapons of this calibre have not been used since the ceasefire came into effect from November 2003," the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff, B.S. Thakur, said here today. The Indian Army has assured restraint and commitment to the ceasefire across the Line of Control. "Apparently, there is going to be a series of discussions on this and I am sure that with the kind of understanding that exists between the two Armies, there will be a better understanding and a greater degree of restraint by both sides." The sectoral commanders of the Indian Army were aware of the confidence-building measures and the troops conscious of the dimensions and implications of the ceasefire, he said. Lt. Gen. Thakur underlined the seriousness of the situation and hinted at the possibility of the involvement of middle-level Pakistani army officers. "The orders for opening fire from mortars would have come from the battalion commander." The officer declined to link the firing to the killing of five militants the previous night. Lt. Gen. Thakur said the first shell from a 60 mm mortar was the first to land at Durga post, north of Poonch, soon after dusk. After an hour, a dozen shells from a large calibre mortar rained on the nearby Banvat post for nearly 45 minutes.
