SANGAREDDY, JAN. 19. Medak district has set itself a target of converting 500 habitations into `no-child labour habitation' by admitting 4,500 children in residential bridge schools by the year-end. A five-day special drive to reach the target will begin on January 26. Children who have never been enrolled in any school and dropouts up to the age of 14 will be identified and admitted in 40 bridge schools. The course will be of 10 months duration.
Bridge schools
The Additional Project Director of the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP), Y. Madhusudan, told The Hindu that ActionAid, Hyderabad, would set up two bridge schools in Patancheru and Jinnaram of the district for child labourers of Orissa. In all, 800 children who had been working in sand filters along the Orissa coastline would be brought here soon. Five more bridge schools, especially for minorities, and two schools for girls would be set up during this academic year, he said. Fifteen madrasas were identified for modernisation of syllabus and a teaching volunteer would be provided for each of the madrasas. Efforts would be made to make Mandal Education Officers more accountable with respect to spending of funds available under the DPEP and Sarvasiksha Abhiyan, Mr. Madhusudan said, adding that Rs. 3.74 crores was found to be misappropriated by mandal-level officers from teacher grants. Utilisation certificates worth crores of rupees had not been submitted so far, he said. In Alladurg alone, Rs. 4 crores was unaccounted for. The official said that that the amount would be recovered from Mandal Education Officers.
