Police sound warning to targets

By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD, JAN. 19. The police have identified between 50 and 60 persons belonging to four major political parties -- the Congress, Telangna Rashtra Samithi, Bharatiya Janata Party and Telugu Desam Party -- in the district as `non-protected political targets' of the Maoists and asked them to be alert to the possibility of danger.

They are considered as highly vulnerable to attacks by Maoists and have been asked to leave their native villages or towns to safer places. The Sub-Inspectors of respective police stations talked to them over the phone and suggested that they leave their places soon.

The higher authorities in the Police Department, meanwhile, are monitoring the situation police station-wise in the wake of `aberrations' in the ceasefire between the Government and the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and the CPI (ML)-Janasakthi group.

The Superintendent of Police, N. Madhusudhan Reddy, earlier said only the TDP and BJP leaders were targeted by the naxalites, but now leaders of four political parties including the TRS are said under threat of attacks.

With this, a majority of leaders, particularly mandal-level leaders, from sarpanch to Mandal Praja Parishad President had to leave their headquarters.

No gunmen

Meanwhile, the police seemed to have taken a cautious approach as far as the provision of gunmen to these targets was concerned.

The police feel that it is something like stirring up a hornet's nest as once gunmen were offered to political activists there would be innumerable requests. "It is a very delicate issue and we will have to examine it carefully," the SP said.

On the arrangements in connection with the Maoists bandh on Thursday, Mr. Reddy said the police were alert and prepared to face any eventuality.
