CHENNAI, JAN. 19. The Founder and Chairman of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, G.Venkataswamy, was today conferred with `For the Sake of Honour Award' by the Rotary Club of Madras East for his medical services towards the needy and cause of eradication of preventable blindness. Dr. Venkataswamy said the challenge at present was to provide quality health care to the rural poor at an affordable cost. That was what Aravind Eye Hospital, founded in 1976, has achieved by treating rural poor, free of cost and yet maintained high standards. He urged the organisations such as Rotary Club of Madras East to take part in eradicating diseases. Presenting the award N.Ravi, Editor, The Hindu, said the awardee had turned compassionate service into a way of life. Commending his contribution to the rural poor, he said Dr.Venkataswamy set an example for excellent management. A citation was presented to the awardee by the Club's president, R.Venkatakrishnan.
