HYDERANAD, JAN 19. The little stab of the needle is all set to get safer in Hyderabad, a city where nearly 70 per cent of injections were found to be unsafe.

The first of its kind in the country Model Injection Centre (MIC) and Model Demonstration Centre (MDC) inaugurated at the Niloufer Hospital for women and children here on Wednesday, will aim at rationalising the number of injections, inculcating safe injection practices and safe disposal practices as well in medical professionals.

The centres, inaugurated by the Indian Test cricketer, V.V.S. Laxman, in the outpatient building of Niloufer, will be functional from Thursday, with all patients at the hospital requiring injections to be sent to the MIC. Medical and nursing students, paramedical staff and doctors will receive training through weekly sessions on how to use the needle safely at the MDC, the Hospital Superintendent, N.C.K. Reddy said.

Pilot project

The pilot project to make injections a safe affair is being carried out by Niloufer and PATH, an international non-profit organisation working in the field of safe medical practices. The centres will be replicated in other Government hospitals across Andhra Pradesh, and gradually in other States too.

Satish B. Kaipilyawar, representing PATH, said World Health Organisation (WHO) surveys across the globe had estimated 16 billion injections being administered every year, out of which four billion were in India.

Two-third of these injections were unsafe, posing health hazards to recipients and health workers, pressing the need for safe injection practices, Dr. Kaipilyawar said.

The MDC, centre co-ordinator Rajitha Kanchan said, would impart training to members of the Indian Medical Association, the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, the Trained Nurses Association of India, the Andhra Pradesh Nursing Homes Association and private practitioners.

Audio visual aids, posters and pamphlets for the general public will also be available.

Cricketer V.V.S. Laxman, who endorses the anti-HIV and Pulse Polio campaigns of the UNICEF and the Government of India, has agreed to be part of PATH's safe injection practices campaign as well.
