HYDERABAD, JAN. 19. The Nehru Zoological Park, which is tying itself in knots to explain the recent string of deaths at its facility, now has fresh controversies stalking it. The latest episode that came as a blow to the zoo pertains to embezzlement of funds to the tune of Rs. 20.62 lakhs. A recent audit of the zoo accounts had exposed the mismatch between receipts and remittances forcing authorities to seek the help of police in investigating the matter. One of the zoo accounts officer, whose involvement in the misappropriation was suspected by the officials, has been handed over to the police. According to the zoo curator, B. Srinivas, the fraudulent practice that went on from January 2004 to May 2004, had led to the pocketing of zoo revenues instead of remitting them into the heads concerned.
Accounts not updated
The revenue generated through different sources, including gate collection, film and television shootings and entry for safari parks, was not updated properly. The accounts officer, Khaja Nazmuddin, Mr. Srinivas said, had allegedly siphoned off the money instead of depositing the same in the zoo accounts. "We realised this much before the audit and shifted the accounts officer to another wing and the fraud went on till the new officer took over in May last year," the curator said. The officer had been suspended and the Bahadurpura police arrested and produced him before the court. Mr. Srinivas said a thorough verification of the zoo accounts was taken up to assess the extent of the fraud. "As of now, we estimate it to be Rs. 20.62 lakhs, but we have taken up a close scrutiny of the entire accounting to see if there is anything more," he added. The Bahadurpura Inspector, Ram Mohan Rao said the accounts officer was arrested following the complaint from the zoo and remanded to judicial custody.
