dated January 21, 1955: U.N. chief meets Dulles

The U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, told The U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. John Foster Dulles, in Washington on January 19 that he thought it would be possible to obtain the release of the 11 U.S. airmen imprisoned in China "given restraint on all sides." This was disclosed in a communique issued after Mr. Hammarskjoeld had given Mr. Dulles a first-hand report on his Peking mission to get the American airmen freed. Mr. Dulles told Mr. Hammarskjoeld that there was strong sentiment in the U.S. for direct action against People's China over the prisoners issue. But President Eisenhower's policy ``was to leave the matter to the U.N. and abstain from any intervention which might embarrass that body."
