BANGALORE, JAN. 20. The Minister for Sericulture, C. Chennigappa, has announced 100 per cent subsidy for silkworm rearers, who wish to take up drip irrigation. While the Central Silk Board will contribute Rs. 15 crores, the State will chip in Rs. 12 crores to meet the requirement in 2005-2006. Speaking to presspersons at the foundation day celebrations of the Karnataka State Sericulture Research and Development Institute, Mr. Chennigappa said that the Cabinet had approved the proposal and would implemented by April. Sericulturists manufacturing "bivoltine" silk would be given an incentive of Rs. 100 for every kg of silk produced. The Government had disbursed Rs. 1.6 crores for the same in 2004-2005. There was a proposal to remove the ceiling on eligibility to give subsidy for drip irrigation. This year, farmers cultivating mulberry to rear silkworms on one hectare or more are eligible. However, those growing mulberry on a smaller area might also be considered, he said. Arvind Jannu, Director of Sericulture, said that the department had set a target to increase the mulberry cultivation area to one lakh hectares in 2005-2006. It proposed to enhance cocoon production to 80,000 tonnes and silk production to 10,000 tonnes. H. Hanumanthappa, Chairman of the Central Silk Board, and U.D. Bongale, Director of the institute, were present.
