Punjab fails to qualify

NEW DELHI, JAN. 20. Punjab, a ten-time winner, has failed to qualify for the women's National hockey championship this year. At the regional qualifying tournament in Phagwara, Punjab was pipped by Haryana and PEPSU from the six-team event.

The qualifiers: Region I: Haryana and PEPSU. Region II: Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Region III: Mumbai and Air India. Region IV: Jharkhand and Mizoram. Region V: Orissa and Chhattisgarh. Region VI: Karnataka and Kerala. Direct entries: Railways (defending champion) and Indian Universities (runner-up). — Our Sports Reporter
