Kolkata to host tsunami appeal match

KOLKATA, JAN. 20. The second world cricket tsunami appeal match has been awarded to Kolkata and it will be played on February 13.

The president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Jagmohan Dalmiya, said here on Thursday that the finance ministry has accorded tax exemption to the match on the condition that a charitable trust was put in place to handle the funds. "We have complied with the condition and a trust has been formed for the purpose,'' he said.

Dalmiya said: "The slogan for the game will be `Cricket for Humanity'" and added that the cricketing world would leave no stone unturned to ensure that a human chain was built across the world so that everyone donates generously for the cause. He said there has been a warm response from various cricket-playing countries.

The ACC chief said other details like the telecast of the match, composition of the teams and timing of the game would be decided later. He, however, hinted that the game could be a day-night affair. Like the first match played at Melbourne earlier this month, an ICC World XI would take on Asia XI.

He said it was yet to be decided whether the money raised from the game would be given to an agency to undertake relief and rehabilitation work. He opined that the proceeds would be collected by the ACC and distributed for worthy causes throughout the region. — Our Special Correspondent
