Knit-tech to host fashion fest

By M. Gunasekaran

TIRUPUR, JAN. 20. The eighth edition of India's largest knitting technology biannual fair, Knit-tech 2005, slated for February 24-28, for the first time will host a one-day `Fashion Fest' at Tirupur as a precursor.

"Our aim is to provide platform to young talents to display their creations and the industry can choose the fashion designers for their own factories through the event," M. A. Rayappan, Chairman, Hi-tech International Trade Fair Limited told The Hindu.

Students from nearly 20 colleges across Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Erode and Salem districts, studying fashion design or textile technology will participate in the fest.

A 9 sq. m. stall will be provided to each team at free of cost to display their collections and creations. And a ramp show will be held in the evening.

Tirupur is one of the biggest centres exporting several thousand crores worth of knitted merchandise to some of the most sophisticated markets in Europe, Australia and the U.S. According to Mr. Rayappan, with the advent of globalisation the region expects a 30 per cent rise in export earnings in this year itself. "To fulfil this mind boggling additional demand the exporters have to make new investments in equipments and technologies, but the real investment has to be the investment in human resources."

Exporters, buying houses and designers would attend the festival to study the trends and the students have the opportunity to meet them and discuss their plans and career. The exporters were keen to appoint new talented faces who could shoulder responsibilities in the changed environment caused by globalisation, said Mr. Rayappan.

Rewards

A cash award of Rs. 10,000 and a revolving trophy would be presented to the best team and Rs. 10,000 each would be given to `Miss Knit International' and `Mr Knit International' while Rs. 5,000 each would be given to their runner-ups. Mr. Rayappan said the Fashion Fest would be held annually with theme-based shows.
