YSR, Shinde's Bakrid wishes

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday extended best wishes to all Muslims on the eve of Bakrid (Id-ul-Zuha).

In a statement, Dr. Reddy said the sacred occasion of Id-ul-Zuha symbolises dedication, supreme sacrifice, compassion and brotherhood. He wanted peace and harmony to prevail everywhere.

The Governor, S.K. Shinde, also extended wishes to Muslims.

In a message, the Governor said Bakrid symbolises sacrifice and compassion for the poor.

In another message, the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, said Bakrid symbolised sacrifice and hoped that the sacred occasion would bring happiness to Muslims.

WB team meets Minister

HYDERABAD: The Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, has said that awareness campaign will be launched by the Velugu project (Indira Kranti patham) in the State to emphasis on the need of using individual sanitary latrines (ISL) for personal hygiene.

Mr. Srinivas informed this to a delegation of the World Bank's Water and Sanitation programme of South Asia, which met him on Thursday. He said it was must for people to use ISL. The districts, which achieve 100 per cent success in the drive would be provided incentives.

The WB team leader, Mark Ellari, pilot projects would be launched in Nizamabad, Nellore and Cuddapah districts for construction of ISL.

Continue talks: BCs

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Association president and member of the monitoring committee, R. Krishnaiah, has urged the Government to immediately announce dates for the second round of talks with Maoists.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Krishnaiah urged the police as well as naxalites to observe restraint and respect the ceasefire agreement. He reminded the Congress Government of its promise made before elections that there would be no fake encounters.

He appealed to naxalites to refrain from destroying the Government property.

Four die in car-lorry collision

Kakinada: Four persons, including an infant, were killed and two others critically injured, when the car in which they were travelling collided with a lorry near the Korangi bridge, 20 km from here, in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to the police, the infant, born at a PHC at Thallarevu last night, was being brought to the Government hospital here for treatment when the accident occurred. The driver, Dara Arjun, was among the dead. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.

Lifer for six in murder case

ANANTAPUR: The District and Sessions Judge, P. Bhaskar, on Thursday sentenced life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 500 each to six persons involved in a murder at Dadithota village of Tadimarri in the district in 2002.

Rami Reddy of former Minister G. Nagi Reddy's group was killed a clash with the rival group of G. Pulla Reddy in the village on February 16, 2002. In all, 14 persons were accused in the case.

The judge acquitted eight persons and convicted others. Those sentenced for life imprisonment were Y. Narapu Reddy, Y.T. Srinivasa Reddy, V. Subba Reddy, G. Venkat Reddy, Maruthi Naidu and C. Narayanaswamy.

Irrigation budget finalised

Hyderabad: The budget for irrigation for 2005-06 has reportedly been finalised at Rs. 8,500 crores. Out of this, Rs 7,600 crores will be the plan outlay.

The finalisation has been reportedly made at a meeting of officials from the Finance & Planning Department attended by the Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah, and top officials from the Irrigation Department.

SI surfaces in Hyderabad

NALGONDA: The Gudipally probationary Sub-Inspector, Raju, who had been missing since January 17, appeared before the Hyderabad range DIG, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, at his office on Thursday. Speaking to The Hindu over phone, Raju said that he had left the police station due to `some personal problems.' He refuted the allegation that there was a link between Maoists' warnings and his disappearance. He further maintained that he had explained his problems to the DIG.

The DIG said that he had asked the SI to report to the Superintendent of Police, Harish K. Gupta, immediately.

Fatal hit for camel

CUDDAPAH: A camel died on being hit by a private bus near Yerraballe in Rajampet mandal on Wednesday night. The driver, Sampath Kumar, conductor and cleaner of the Pothula Travels bus, going from Tirupati to Hyderabad, sustained injuries, according to the police.

MRPS threat

CUDDAPAH: MRPS functionaries will obstruct Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's `Rajiv nagara baata' programme if all recruitments were not kept in abeyance until the SC classification issue was solved, according to the samithi leaders.

The MRPS State president, Dandu Veeraiah Madiga, while addressing the activists who continued relay fast before the Collectorate for the second day on Thursday, claimed support for the agitation by several parties and public organisations.

BIE Commissioner gheraoed

ANANTAPUR: The activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) gheraoed the Commissioner of Board of Intermediate Education, D. Chakrapani, here on Thursday demanding disciplinary action against the principal of the Government Junior College in the Old Town alleging that the latter had committed several irregularities.

They barged into the place where the official was conducting a meeting with principals of junior colleges in the district and obstructed the meeting for an hour.

They listed the irregularities committed by the principal to the Commissioner.

Two APCLC activists held

CUDDAPAH: The Jammalamadugu police took two Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee functionaries into custody near Dommaranandyala village on the Jammamaladugu-Tadpatri road late on Wednesday night.

The APCLC district executive member, Bhaskar (24), and the activist, Ramakrishna (31), both belonging to Veparala village in Mylavaram mandal, were arrested. They were moving suspiciously and naxal literature was seized from them, according to the police. Meanwhile, the APCLC State treasurer, R. Shamir Basha, condemned the arrests.

Deer horns sezied

KHAMMAM: The wildlife division authorities seized 420 antlers and horns of the deer, black bucks and sambars in a major raid conducted in Lakshmidevipalli village near Kothagudem on Thursday. The Wildlife DFO, Kondal Rao, said that seizure included a pair of antlers along with skulls.

The accused, Mohammad Pasha, was arrested and remanded to custody. The wildlife authorities conducted simultaneous raids on the houses few others who were also suspected to have involved in the clandestine operation. The forest officials said the antlers were being sold by the accused to parties with contacts in the international market.

Ryots' complaint to Manmohan

Hyderabad: The Federation of Farmers' Associations has written to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, protesting against `non-involvement' of farmers in a seminar on pesticide use being organised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in Hyderabad on Thursday and Friday.

According to the letter, a copy of which was released to the press here on Thursday, P. Chengal Reddy, honorary chairman of the federation, has charged that the attitude of the Director General of ICMR was highly detrimental to the interests of farmers.

Rs. 30-cr. loan to SHGs

CUDDAPAH: Self-help groups in Cuddapah district will be extended loans of Rs. 30 crores this year, the DRDA/Velugu Project Director, Smitha Sabharwal, said on Thursday.

SHGs in each mandal would be granted loans of at least Rs. 50 lakhs, she said in a review meeting here. She urged convergency officials to ensure loan disbursal to disabled persons. The Velugu Additional PD, D. Anil Kumar Reddy, district programme managers, assistant project officers of DRDA participated.

CUDDAPAH: The District Youth Welfare Officer, B. Maheswara Reddy, said on Thursday that 1,461 youths were selected for grounding 923 units under Rajiv Yuva Shakthi programme.

A subsidy of Rs. 38.81 lakhs was released so far out of Rs. 1.80 crores sanctioned by banks to 246 beneficiaries, he said in a statement. Free training was provided to 1,792 candidates for recruitment of Army and para-military forces. Forty youth were trained on repairing cell phones, he added.

CUDDAPAH: A Continuing Medical Education camp will be held at the Government Homeopathic Medical College here on January 23 and 24. About 50 Government doctors and private practitioners would be trained on national health schemes, AIDS prevention, skin diseases etc., the college principal, P. Raghava Reddy, said in a statement on Thursday.

Legal literacy camp

CUDDAPAH: A legal literacy camp will be held at Saipet here on January 22 evening. The Senior Civil Judge and District Legal Services Authority Secretary, P. Lakshminarayana, said on Thursday that judicial, revenue and police officers, and advocates would take part.

ANANTAPUR: The fan club of film star Chiranjeevi here is setting up a bronze statue for Nobel laureate, Mother Teresa, near the municipality office. The statue will be unveiled on January 29. Chiranjeevi's brother, K. Nagendrababu, several elected representatives and officials are likely to participate in the programme.

CHITTOOR: The V.C.R.Degree and B.Cd colleges correspondent, V.Chandrasekhar Reddy, along with the principal, K.Somasekhar, and administrative officer, K.Subramanyam Pillai, presented a demand draft for Rs. 11,116 towards the Chief Minister's relief fund to the district Collector, S.S.Rawath, on Thursday for relief to tsunami victims.

NIZAMABAD: All bank branches of Andhra Bank in the town are jointly organising an investors' meet at Hotel Kapila here on January 22 at 5 p.m, according to the senior branch manager, Ch. Gopala Krishna. In a press release here on Thursday, he said the meeting will be presided over by G.D.V. Prasad Rao, the Deputy General Manager, Karimnagar zone. The meet is being co-hosted by the Andhra Bank Financial Services and the Unit Trust of India. Experts from stock markets would make a detailed presentation on mutual funds.

Special book exhibition

WARANGAL: In connection with the forthcoming CPI (M) State executive council meeting here, the Prajashakthi Book House launched a special book exhibition at the Town Hall, which would last till January 29. The Book House, which will be open from 9 am to 9 pm is offering 10 per cent discount on purchases. Those on display, will include Telugu and English books brought out by the State and national level publishers on a wide range of topics.

Child welfare programme

ADILABAD: The second phase of Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme would commence from April 1, 2005, according to the Commissioner, Family Welfare, C. B. S. Venkatramana. He was talking to reporters at Luxettipet mandal headquarters on Thursday after a visit to the area.

The Commissioner said thrust would be given to emergency rural transport scheme in Adilabad district. As part of the scheme, five ambulances would be purchased at five select area hospitals in the district, he said.

Woman dies of suffocation

NIZAMABAD: An octogenarian woman, Ganga Gangavva, died of suffocation when a provision store in which she was sleeping caught fire due to electric short circuit at Pothangal Kalan village in Gandhari mandal after midnight. According to information received here, Gangavva who alerted the family members about the fire fell prey to the flames. She died due to suffocation as the kirana store was engulfed in a fog emanated with the grain bags being burnt. An estimated Rs.10 lakh worth of property was destroyed in the mishap.

Distinction for junior college

KARIMNAGAR: Students of the Alphores Junior College, Karimnagar, excelled in the seventh National Science Olympiad organised in New Delhi recently. Nineteen of the college students secured the highest ranks including first and sixth rank at the all-India level and were selected for the second level test of the Science Olympiad, which is likely to be held in Febraury this year. Fouzia Niloufer secured all-India first rank under the 11th standard BiPC category, while K Viswan Reddy secured sixth rank in the same category.
