CPI cries halt to violence

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE, JAN. 20. The MP and State secretary of the Communist Party of India, S. Sudhakara Reddy, has said the stalemate over peace talks confirmed the party's fears that a section of the police were against the process from the beginning.

Mr. Reddy, who inaugurated the party office at Sullurpet on Thursday, said: "The police seemed to have bent on teaching a lesson to naxalites after the recent killing of Surendra Babu, police official in Bihar and who belonged to the State. This resulted in spurt in violence." Mr. Reddy wanted the Government to restore confidence in naxalites before going into second round of talks. The Government should ensure end to encounters, he asserted and also appealed to naxalites to stop violence. The CPI, he made it clear, would always support `meaningful dialogue'.

Regarding the party's support to the Government on general issues, Mr. Sudhakara Reddy said it would be issue-based.

He lashed out at the previous Telugu Desam Government accusing it of bowing to the dictates of the World Bank.
