Sangh Parivar protests against `Festival of Blessings'

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, JAN. 20. Around 1,000 members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), and the Bajrang Dal will participate in a protest organised by the Sangh Parivar in Bangalore against the alleged patronage extended by the State Government to the California-based evangelist, Benny Hinn's religious programme, "Festival of Blessings."

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the district unit of the BJP, Prasanna Kumar, said that the Sangh Parivar has decided to interrupt the three-day programme which is to begin in Bangalore on Friday.

Procession

Members of the BJP, VHP, and Bajrang Dal took out a procession here under the banner of "Dharma Jagarana Vedike," to protest against the patronage extended to the programme by the State Government.

Members of the Sangh Parivar, led by the convener of the district unit of the Bajrang Dal, Panduranga, began their protest march from the Hemavathi statue and raised slogans against Benny Hinn and the Government.

Memorandum

The protesters submitted a memorandum addressed tothe Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to the DeputyCommissioner seeking the cancellation of the proposed programme.

Mr. Panduranga said that the programme was against the secular principles of the country. He added that the decision of the State Government to allow the evangelist to hold a religious programme at the Jakkur airfield was not right and will hurt the sentiments of other religious communities.

He urged the Chief Minister to stop Benny Hinn from conducting the programme as it might disturb the communal harmony of the region.
