Focus on special education

NEW DELHI JAN. 20. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) have signed an agreement to make inclusive education a reality by developing appropriate education programmes to enable teachers to train both normal and "special children" in a general school environment.

According to the agreement, both the statutory bodies will work towards developing a course curriculum on special education that will be soon incorporated as a component in general teacher preparation programmes.

"The RCI aims to meet the demand of special educators in general schools across the country. For teachers' training there is a well established infrastructure in the country, the same facilities could be very helpful to give a boost to special education," said the RCI Chairman, H.P.S. Ahluwalia, after signing the agreement.

Railway seminar

NEW DELHI JAN. 20. A two-day technical seminar on the mechanisation of track maintenance, re-laying and construction was today inaugurated by the Ministers of State for Railways, Naranbhai J. Rathwa and R. Velu in the Capital. The seminar is being organised by the Institute of Permanent Way Engineers (IRPWE), a technical body under the auspices of Indian Railways.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rathwa urged the need for the usage of indigenously built track machines in order to save foreign exchange. This would also generate employment opportunities and build up the confidence of engineers, he added. A souvenir and a technical book on the mechanization of track maintenance, re-laying and construction were also released.

Quiz organised

NEW DELHI JAN. 20. The St. Mark's Senior Secondary Public School held several book related activities recently in which about 600 students took part. Literacy quiz, know an author, creative writing and world of words were some of the activities which culminated in a grand prize distribution ceremony.

MLAs hand over cheque

NEW DELHI JAN. 20. For the relief and rehabilitation of the tsunami victims, a delegation led by MLA from the Hastsal Assembly constituency, Mukesh Sharma, today handed over a cheque for Rs.5, 51, 000 to the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, at Raj Niwas here.

The money was collected on the occasion of Mr. Sharma's birthday at Sadhbhawana Nagar here on Tuesday in which Mata ki Chowki was organised by the members of Vikaspuri Welfare Club and the residents of Hastsal.

On the occasion, a large number of people from all over the Capital including politicians cutting across various political parties and people from different walks of life participated.

Infertility update

NEW DELHI JAN. 20. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) will be holding an infertility update on January 23 at its premises in which about 200 delegates from the Capital and other cities would be participating.

The objective of holding this update -- that will be inaugurated by the Chairman, Board of Management, SGRH, S.K. Sama, -- will be to discuss the latest modalities of treating infertile couples.

About the theme of the update, the consultant in-charge of infertility and IVF unit of SHRH, Abha Mujumdar, said the aim was to dispel the myths which were based on hearsay and scientific knowledge learnt during the formative years of training.
