German Embassy raises a hope in Nizamuddin

NEW DELHI, JAN. 20. The German Ambassador, Heimo Richter, today handed over a cheque for Rs. 3 lakhs to the Hope Project -- the non-governmental organisation working in the slums of Nizamuddin Basti here.

The fund would be used for setting up a night shelter for some 25 street children of the area and providing necessary infrastructure like lockers, dinner for one year, cloths and a social worker, besides operating a crèche and a kindergarten.

Reflecting the concern of the staff and the family members of the German Embassy here, the money is the result of the profits generated from sales of various German specialities during the Christmas markets at the German House in 2003 and 2004.

The items like coffee, biscuits, cucumbers, honey, beer and wine imported from the country were sold by the staff members and spouses of the Embassy. By coincidence both the stalls selling beer and wine under the motto "Drinks for Charity" and the eatable had managed to make almost the same profits of Rs. 1.5 lakhs each.

Senior officials of the Hope Project said the German Embassy has been providing them financial assistance and also helping them to "uplift" the living standard of the poor residents of the area.
