Apathy to NCC irks Army Chief

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 20. The Chief of the Army Staff, General Nirmal Chander Vij, today expressed displeasure at the low priority being given by several States to the NCC.

During a visit to the NCC Republic Day Camp at Delhi Cantonment, General Vij urged them to recognise the "huge human potential". "While 10-odd States are paying a lot of attention, some are really taking the NCC very lightly. They should devote more time and energy to it because when these youths grow up, they will be the future of the States."

He congratulated the States including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra for their financial support to the NCC and asked the NCC Director General, Lieutenant-General Bhandari, to "convince those not doing enough to look at the huge human potential".

He also added that it was the discipline and performance of girl cadets that had helped him to take the decision to increase the strength of lady officers in the Indian Army. "We have increased the number of ladies in officers training programme to 250 and I am sure this will continue to increase over the years because they are doing a good job," said General Vij.

On his arrival at the Camp, General Vij inspected a guard of honour presented by a contingent NCC cadets and later visited the Motivation Hall and the Flag area before interacting with the cadets.

NCC cadets also presented a short cultural programme in the honour of the Chief of Army Staff who presented a rolling trophy to be awarded to senior division cadet of Army Wing of NCC during the Prime Minister's rally.
