Call to revoke decision on kerosene quota

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 20. Terming the decision of the Sheila Dikshit Government to reduce quota of kerosene oil to the Below Poverty Line (BLP) ration card holders as anti-people and anti-poor, the Nationalist Congress Party today held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding revocation of the decision and restoration of the original quota.

The senior party leader and Member of Parliament, Tariq Anwar and the NCP MLA led the dharna from Badarpur, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri.

The party also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking revocation of the decision as it had badly affected lakhs of families living in the JJ clusters and unauthorised colonies. According to Mr. Bidhuri the decision to curtail the quota in the name of rationalisation was nothing but eyewash. The decision was aimed at benefiting the depot holders and contractors whose quota had not been reduced but that of the poor people had been slashed for some strange reason. Seeking the intervention of the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit in the matter, Mr. Bidhuri said while the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre was talking of strengthening of the Public Distribution System, the officials in the Delhi Government were trying to sabotage the whole thing.

Expressing surprise over the decision, Mr. Anwar said that the Central Government had not reduced the quota of kerosene oil to the Delhi Government and therefore it was surprising that the poor were being deprived of their rightful share among the PDS items.

Mr. Bidhuri said his party would continue to agitate till the decision to restore the quota is not taken by the Delhi Government. He also sought strong action against the private power distribution companies for issuing inflated bills to the consumers on a large scale and urged for an independent probe in the fast running metres installed by these companies.

The billing and metre reading independent experts should verify software of these companies so that the truth emerges and the real picture comes before the people, he added.
