Leaders extend Bakrid greetings

BANGALORE JAN. 20. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the Minister for Water Resources and Transport, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, the Minister for Housing, Anjana Murthy, the Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, the Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology, Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, the Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajashekharan, and the Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy, have greeted the people on the occasion of Bakrid. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has greeted the people on the occasion. In his message, he urged the people to rededicate themselves to uphold the principles of love, compassion and understanding and "avow to live in fellowship as brothers and sisters."

MLA donates Rs. 30 lakhs

BANGALORE JAN. 20. The Davangere MLA, Shamanur Shivashankarappa, has donated Rs. 30 lakhs to the tsunami relief fund of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, according to an official press release. Mr. Shivashankarappa handed over a demand draft for the amount to the KPCC President, B. Janardana Poojari, at a function at the party office here today. Mr. Shivashankarappa also donated Rs. 4.15 lakhs to the fund, which he had collected from various organisations. Earlier, he donated Rs. 5 lakhs to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and Rs. 8 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, the release said.

New Kodagu in-charge Minister

Madikeri Jan. 20. In a surprise development, the Government has appointed the Horticulture Minister, A. Srinivas, in-charge of Kodagu district, replacing the Minister of State for Labour and Haj, Tanvir Sait. The reason for the change is not known. Mr. Srinivas is from the Janata Dal (Secular), who represents Mulbagal in the State Assembly.

Power reactor to go critical

BANGALORE JAN. 20. A 540-MW nuclear power reactor will become operational in the next few weeks at Tarapur in Maharashtra, S. Banerjee, Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), said here today. He was speaking at Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) unit after receiving an indigenously developed remote-controlled equipment to handle fuels in nuclear reactors. With this, India will be among the few countries that have 540-MW nuclear power units. The unit, the fourth at the Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS-4), is supposed to feed the western grid. Of the 14 existing operational reactors, eight are of 220-MW capacity and one is of 200 MW. The capacity of the rest ranges from 100 MW to 170 MW. Together, they generate 2,770 MW of electricity. Dr. Banerjee said another 750-MW power plant has been planned but its location has not been finalised.

KSOU radio counselling

MYSORE Jan. 20. Karnataka State Open University's (KSOU) Radio Counselling for the benefit of students of management and education will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on January 25.

According to a press release from KSOU Dean (Academic), Lecturer, Department of Studies in Management, M.S. Yateesh Chandra, will provide counselling on "Marketing Management — Introduction — Final B Com" from 4 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Lecturer, Department of Studies in Education, H.B. Usha will provide counselling on "Methods of Education Psychology - II BA" from 4.30 p.m. to 5 p.m..

KSOU students, who wish to participate in the programme, should call All India Radio, Bangalore, on Ph. 080-22268152, 22264454 and 22281206.

Sixth pay panel sought

MYSORE Jan. 20. The Mysore unit of Indian Railway Technical Supervisors' Association (IRTSA) has sought the early setting up of Sixth Pay Commission for central government employees during the Demands' Day observed today.

According to a press release, all engineers of railway workshop and Mysore Railway division wore badges containing their demands, which also include redressal of anomalies in the Fifth Pay Commission during the Demands' Day.

LLB results on website

MYSORE Jan. 20. The marks and results of LL.B. examinations held during November/December 2004 will be available on the University website http://www.uni-mysore.ac.in/results.

According to a press release from the Registrar (Evaluation), University of Mysore, the results and marks sheet will be distributed to the colleges on January 22. Stolen car confiscated

CHITRADURGA JAN. 20. Chitradurga police have confiscated a stolen car and apprehended the driver of the vehicle in Chitradurga on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, the police inspector T.H. Rajappa, who was on night rounds saw the car moving in a suspicious manner. The police revealed that the car had been stolen from Shimoga on January 8. Suresh alias Hamid (26) of Chitradurga, the driver, was arrested.

The driver was produced before the court and he has been remanded in judicial custody.

Water supply scheme

Bidar Jan. 20. People of Khajapur in Bidar taluk have urged the Government to implement a water supply scheme to permanently solve the acute water scarcity in their village.

In a memorandum to the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, Antony Mendonca, Gunawantrao Patil and other villagers said that both the wells, which provided them drinking water, had dried up.

World Year

of Physics

GULBARGA Jan. 20. The District Science Centre here has decided to observe the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein's miraculous year when he published three important papers describing ideas that have influenced modern physics and organise a function to mark "World Year of Physics" and holding an open house quiz contest for students and general public on Nobel Laureates.

The District Science Officer, K. Sajoo Bhaskaran said in a press note that the function will be held on Sunday.

This coincides with the day when Madam Curie won the Noble Prize with Professor Henri Becquerel for their research on radiation.

Youth festival

Bidar Jan. 20. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad will organise a three-day youth festival in Bidar from Friday, as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda and Subhash Chandra Bose.

Running, long jump, high jump, kabaddi, and volleyball competitions for graduate and pre-university students at the Government Polytechnic College grounds have been organised on Friday.

Singing, elocution, and essay-writing competitions will be held at Girija Hall on Sunday. Interested may contact the ABVP office in Bidar, said a release.

Memorial

Bidar Jan. 20. Gorta (B) Memorial Agitation Committee has demanded that a memorial be erected in remembrance of those who were killed by the Razakars, the private army of the Nizam of Hyderabad, at Gorta (B) in Basavakalyan taluk.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the president of the committee, Rajeshekar Swamy Gorta, demanded that at least Rs. 10 lakhs be released towards the construction.

According to him, over 200 people lost their lives in the genocide committed by the Razakars in the village on May 9 and 10, 1948.

Clinic inaugurated

<150> HUBLI Jan. 20. The Mahaveera Charitable Clinic started under the auspices of the Mahaveera Youth Federation with a view to providing free medicine to the poor was inaugurated here on Wednesday by Murugharajendra Swamiji of Chitradurga.

The clinic will work like an outpatient department. It has one doctor and the necessary paraphernalia. It is open between 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. and between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to Mahendra Singhi of the Mahaveera Youth Federation.
