Council mourns tsunami victims

BANGALORE, JAN. 20. The Legislative Council today mourned those killed in the tsunami tragedy. It also mourned the death of the former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao; the doyenne of classical music, M.S. Subbulakshmi; the former Chief Justice of the High Court of Mysore, Nittoor Srinivasa Rau; the freedom fighter Kollur Mallappa, the scientist, Raja Ramanna; the Kannada writer Shanakar Mokashi Punekar; and the former Ministers Sagaranahalli Revanna, Raghunath Dhoolappa Kittur, and D.A. Chinnappa.

Reading out the condolence resolution, the acting Chairman, V.R. Sudarshan, said the overwhelming response to the tsunami disaster "only reflected the character and quality of people committed to the cause of humanity" in the State and elsewhere.

The Leader of the House and Minister for Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, said the Government could contribute Rs. 20 crores to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund with the help of the Opposition parties and the people of the State. It could also despatch 600 tonnes of foodgrains, medicines and other relief material to the affected areas, he added.

The Leader of the Opposition, D.H. Shankaramurthy, said the response to the tsunami tragedy was an affirmation of human bondage and thriving values amidst adverse situations.

The Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil, the Minister for Science and Technology, Basavaraj Horatti, and the Janata Dal (United) leader, M.P. Nadagouda, spoke.
