CHENNAI, JAN. 20. Four women labourers of an export unit were killed when the mini-lorry in which they were travelling overturned near Perambakkam, about 20 km from Tiruvallur early today. According to the Superintendent of Police, Tiruvallur,V. Varadha Raju, around 7 a.m. today the lorry picked up 50 women labourers from nearby Irulampalayam, Thakkolam and Perambakkam villages to a private company, where they were working. While negotiating a curve near Perambakkam, the driver applied brakes to avoid hitting a cyclist. But he lost control and the vehicle overturned. Four women, Nadhiya (18), Latha (18), Maheswari (26) and Shanthi (30), who were trapped under the vehicle, were rescued and taken to the Government hospital, where they were declared dead. Of the 23 women brought to Chennai for treatment, 18 were admitted to Government General Hospital here and five were admitted to Government Stanley Hospital. One person sustained head injuries and was operated on at the neurosurgery department of the Government General hospital. The driver of the van fled the scene after the accident. Police are looking fro him. .
