MANGALORE, JAN. 20. The likelihood of anti-social elements setting off explosions along the coast of Kerala and Karnataka is not specific to Mangalore, but a general alert, the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Subash Bharani, has said. The police are taking steps to thwart such acts. Noting that there are indications that certain elements could resort to bomb explosions from the coast of Gujarat to Kerala, he told The Hindu over telephone from Bangalore that police in all these States were vigilant. Noting that the police were on a general alert to deal with any eventuality, he said there was information that old vehicles could be used by anti-social elements to carry out their nefarious designs. Dr. Bharani said the police in the coastal districts of the State, including Dakshina Kannada, had been asked to be vigilant. He said the various drills carried out by the police here was part of the general alert and added there was no need for people to panic. He advised people to cooperate with local police whenever their assistance was sought for and report any suspicious happenings to the police.
