CHENNAI, JAN. 20. The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and leaders of various political parties have conveyed their greetings to Muslims on the occasion of Id-Ul-Zuha. Mr. Barnala, in his message said, "I convey my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all my Muslim brothers and sisters. Let us reaffirm our faith in the noble virtues of brotherhood and love and promote peace and mutual affinity and contribute for the unity and integrity of our nation." Ms. Jayalalithaa said that Bakrid was the occasion to remember the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim, whose life mission was to uphold the norm of following the command of the Almighty. "Let universal brotherhood flourish! Let humanitarianism shine!" she added. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, said that Id-Ul-Zuha marked the event of the Prophet sacrificing his son to remove poverty and herald prosperity for the people. Bakrid, which underscored the importance of charity was meaningful this year as there was paramount need to extend voluntary help to those affected by the tsunami. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G. K. Vasan, called upon the people to follow the example set by Prophet Mohammed in upholding the equality of men. The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, S.Ramadoss, appealed to the people to rededicate themselves to preserving the unity of mankind and communal harmony. The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, Vaiko, said that Id-Ul-Zuha this year would strengthen communal amity and social harmony in the State.
