COIMBATORE, JAN. 20 . The Mahatma Gandhi Ashram in Anamalai said in a release that it would hand over Rs. 50,000, given to it as reward for service to the needy, to provide relief to the victims. The award was given to the ashram by the former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, in 1998. A women's self-help group formed by the ashram has donated Rs. 20,000. The Indian Medical Association, Udumalpet Branch, has donated Rs. 1.32 lakhs. The district administration has said that 71 persons contributed Rs. 6.36 lakhs today towards rehabilitation of the tsunami victims. So far, 1,487 persons/organisations had contributed Rs. 1.93 crores, an administration release said. Today's contributors included Brick Manufacturers' Association (Rs. 1.10 lakhs), Coimbatore Bar Association (Rs. 61,500), Srimathi Ranganayaki Ammal School (Rs. 36,039), Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees of Vedarcolony, Mettupalayam (Rs. 17,371), Washermen's Association (Rs. 11,101), Document Writers' Association (Rs. 10,000), Hotel Owners' Association (Rs. 10,000), Annai Home for the Aged, Mettupalayam (Rs. 25,000), Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Residents' Welfare Association, Sowripalayam (Rs. 22,767).
