NEW DELHI, JAN. 20. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi today signed an agreement with the Tata Consultancy Services for implementation of the global positioning system (GPS) based vehicle tracking system in its 500 trucks engaged in lifting of garbage and transporting it to sanitary land fill sites. Implementation of the GPS system would facilitate monitoring of movement of refuse removal trucks, clearance of bins and dhalaos, the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, said. "It would also facilitate automatic calculation of charges payable to truck operators by obtaining weighment from electronic weigh bridges located at sanitary landfill sites and distances from off-line GPS devices mounted on trucks," he said. Initially to be installed only in 50 trucks, the GPS system would be extended in six of the 12 zones of the MCD: South, Central, City, Sadar Paharganj, Karol Bagh and West Zone. "The GPS based vehicle tracking system will give effective and efficient system of route planning and monitoring, journey time, unauthorised stoppage, deviation from the route and performance of drivers as well as vehicles," Mr. Mehta said.
