NEW DELHI, JAN. 20. An alleged contract killer has been arrested by the South-West Delhi police for allegedly planning to kill a prime witness in a murder case reported from South Delhi. According to the police, the accused, Virpal Gujjar alias Veeru, a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested following an exchange of fire between him and the police at Sarojini Nagar in South-West Delhi around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. His accomplice, Deepak Balmiki, managed to escape. The accused were riding a scooter which had been stolen from Sarojini Nagar. Firearms and live cartridges were recovered from Virpal. During interrogation, Virpal revealed that he had been promised huge amount of money by Jaggu Pehalwan, his mentor, so that he would be able to live a comfortable life outside U.P. The U.P. police had announced a reward of Rs. 5,000 on his head. Jaggu was involved in the murder of a businessman from South Delhi in 2003 and has been evading his arrest. The case is in trial stage. Jaggu had asked Virpal to eliminate the only witness in the case in order to escape conviction. For the purpose, he had provided Virpal with a scooter and a firearm and had also deputed his associate, Deepak, to help him in the Capital. Deepak was well aware of the area where the witness used to stay. Earlier, Virpal was involved in several cases of murder, attempt to murder and Goonda Act. He had first entered the crime world following dispute within the family. He later came in contact with criminal elements and began indulging in crime. Further investigations in the case are on.
