Man attempts suicide
According to the police, the man, identified as Ramesh alias Shankar, who used to sell tea by the roadside outside Safdarjung Hospital, set himself afire in the park around 4-30 p.m. He was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital with burn injuries. He has been declared unfit for statement. The police said the exact reason behind Ramesh trying to take the extreme step was not clear and they were waiting for his statement. However, there were reports that he was passing through a phase of depression after his stall was removed during a drive to remove encroachment. Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Sarojini Nagar police station and further investigations are on.
Gang smashed
According to the police, information was received by the Pandav Nagar police station on Wednesday night that a Tata-407, standing outside Ganesh Nagar "dharam kanta", might contain some stolen items. When the police arrived at the spot, they found five persons sitting in the rear of the truck. They could not explain the presence of brass metal fittings and sanitary ware in the truck following which they were arrested. During interrogation, the accused -- identified as Arvind, Ezaz, Naeem, Prem Singh, Deepak and Rajeev -- told the police that they had broken into a shop at Hari Nagar in West Delhi yesterday night and escaped with 659 kg of metal fittings and other items. The stolen articles were kept in 23 gunny bags. The police said the gang would first select a target shop or godown to steal articles from and hire a vehicle to transport the goods. After stealing the articles they would scout for receivers of stolen property in Delhi, Meerut and Ghaziabad. A case has been registered at the Pandav Nagar police station and further investigations are on.
